› A NEW TOWN SQUARE FOR GREAT DUNMOW

This project was first conceived some twenty years ago to regenerate and improve the heart of the town.

The construction of new homes and the library have already brought an improvement to an area which had previously consisted of derelict buildings and narrow streets, but it is still unattractive.

As it exists, the poor road surface, broken fences, broken cycle racks, steel security barriers, the rear of the toilet block and the dilapidated Co-Op building all add to the general unattractiveness.

The planned improvements include:

  • The permanent closure of White Street from the High Street to vehicles, with bollards across to allow pedestrian access.
  • Composite stone paving with granite setts to define the roadway. The roadway will be at the same level as the rest of the square.
  • Definition at the edge by planters containing hornbeam hedge, following the removal of the steel barrier by the Co-Op.
  • The replacement of the fence belonging to The Boar's Head.
  • Fencing to prevent access to the rear of the public toilets.
  • New seats and lighting, along with an electricity supply for a Christmas tree.

Great Dunmow Town Square DevelopmentThe land, including the toilet block, will be transferred to Great Dunmow Town Council from Uttlesford District Council.

The project is complicated as the works are being carried out by two main contractors. Taylor Wimpey will carry out all drainage works and complete the surface up to the wearing course. Brooks & Wood (the Town Council’s contractor) will then complete the surfacing works.

Great Dunmow Town Square DevelopmentIt is anticipated that Taylor Wimpey will commence their work in April 2010 and the project will be complete within three months of the start date. Some disruption is unavoidable but temporary fencing will be erected to allow pedestrian access at all times to the library, Co-Op supermarket and public toilets.

It is believed that this scheme will bring significant environmental and community gain to the town, and may act as a catalyst for future improvements.
